Delicious California Merlot, ripe and juicy, with pretty, rich, elegant black cherry, currant, cassis and wild berry flavors that hold their focus on a long, lively finish.

Saturated dark ruby. Floral aromas of bitter cherry, strawberry, dark chocolate, graphite and herbs. High-pitched and juicy in the mouth; not especially fat but has plenty of texture, as well as higher acidity than the '96. Finishes with a firm tannic spine and bright dark cherry flavor.

The 1997 Merlot is a straightforward, medium-bodied, monolithic offering with good cranberry and cherry fruit intermixed with a touch of herbs, wood, and earth. There are 8,700 cases. At $48.00, I can think of several hundred wines from France's Rhone Valley and another several hundred from Italy that deliver considerably more wine for the price. Is that being unfair? Like many overpriced California wines, it is too expensive for what it delivers.
