Good deep red. Bright aromas of medicinal cherry, clove, licorice, mint, meat and underbrush. Minty and moderately ripe; seems a bit clenched at present. Finishes with rather drying tannins. I don't find the sweetness or flesh of the vintage here; in fact, today I prefer Pira Barolo normale

The profound, dense garnet/ruby-colored 1997 Barolo Marenca displays a spectacular bouquet of roasted espresso, kirsch liqueur, blackberries, tobacco, sardines, cedar, and leather. Sumptuous in the mouth, full-bodied, with an exotic overripe character, this dense, thick Barolo tastes sweet because of the high glycerin levels. As it was in cask, this 1997 Barolo remains dominated by its baby fat.
Doug: pretty good Mar: too much alcohol Bri: flowery nose to start then closed up, re-opened later with faint aromas of fruit and balsamic, nice mouth feel, very round and long, can still use more time
