A touch earthy, with polished currant, herb, sage and mineral flavors that are elegant. Mildly tannic. 850 cases made.

Deep, bright ruby-red. Aromas of dark berry liqueur and fine Corinthian leather; distinctly bretty. Very rich, sweet and leathery, with a slight dryness in the mouth. Finishes quite long, with chewy, unrefined tannins. Big, wild cabernet with no shortage of personality.

Patience will be required with the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Select, which was closed, but powerful. The saturated ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of minerals, toasty oak, and jammy black currants. A tannic, muscular, full-bodied wine, it has outstanding extract and purity.

Nice mature Napa cabernet from Howell Mountain. Deep ruby with lighter reds around the edges. Great nose--toast and leather with some fruit still hanging on. In the mouth it's heavier than I expected, without much fruit on the finish. Nice wine, though.

La Jota wines are handcrafted at the original 1898 Fieldstone winery and hillside cave. From the low yielding vines of 28 mountain acres, La Jota produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and their crown jewel, the annual Heritage Release Cabernet Sauvignon (formerly the Anniversary Release).

While growing grapes in the nutrient-lean, volcanic soils of their La Jota estate is a challenge, the rewards are undeniable. Highly concentrated flavors and muscular tannins slowly ripen to perfection, while the cool winds, diurnal temperature swings and high altitude keep the grape acids impeccably balanced, revealing the distinctive voice of the estate. Viticulturist Mariano Navarro and winemaker Christopher Carpenter gently tame tannins while allowing the intriguing mineral, spice and sweet forest loam characters unique to the estate to enhance the complexity of the opulent fruit.
