  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

Fresh ruby color. Very reticent nose hints at flowers and dark berries. Youthfully tight and unevolved, but with excellent intensity and thickness; primary dark berry and violet flavors. Very strong tannic spine gives this a tough finish today. Complicating notes of iron and graphite on the aftertaste.

Smooth, ripe and creamy, with tiers of pear, fig, melon and citrus flavors that turn complex and linger.

Unappetisingly overripe flavours, a lack of acidity and some tired flavours. Pick earlier please!

Big, bold nose and strong berry, tobacco and cherry flavors with low tannins. Taste was surprising fruit forward for a 10-year old wine. More time to breath would have helped to mellow the wine out. Still very good wine that could last another 3 ' 4 years.

Hartwell's Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc vines are ideally situated in the Stags Leap District of Napa, on the steep slope of a dormant volcano. They enjoy all the factors for winegrowing success: warm days, cool nights, good drainage, low yields, and the only granite in Stags Leap. Winemakers Benoit Touquette, trained at the University of Bordeaux, and Andy Erickson, trained at UC Davis, team up with consulting winemaker Michel Rolland to produce single varietal bottlings of distinction.
