Good red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of cassis, violet, lilac and brown spices. Lush and aromatic in the mouth; the combination of a bit more acidity than the Mouline and its mineral and gunflint elements gives this wine noteworthy elegance and firm shape. Tannins are quite fine.

The dense purple-colored, profound 1997 Cote Rotie La Turque (5-7% Viognier added to the blend) offers creme de cassis, licorice, and espresso aromas as well as notions of melted asphalt. Compared to La Mouline, it has additional layers as well as structure, sweet tannin, and exhilarating levels of opulence and ripe fruit.

Gorgeous, silky red that is thickly textured. Full-bodied, with near flawless balance, it delivers layers of mocha, coffee, ginger, blackberry, and brownie flavors. Focused, pure, fresh, it's a big wine, not showy, but beckoning. 400 cases made.

1/18/2011 rated 95 points: I chose this as my favorite wine of the night, - it was balanced, medium bodied, provided such a great early, middle and finish that rolled into one another, really taking me on a couple of minutes ride. Not a stunner or knock your socks off - but it just sang to me, complete elegance and clear direction. This was my first La Turque, and not from the most sought after vintage. Wonderful perfumed nose of lilac, herbs de province, olives, and sage. The fruit was not prominent, but I prefer the herbal/game characteristics. This wine just felt like a very crystal clear note that resonated on and on.

Perfumed nose of smoked meat, tar, black fruits and tobacco. Not a block buster, but refined, elegant, deep and complex. Intense and sweet, with long finish.

Ripe, ready and delicious. Better than a bottle I had in Paris a year ago.

This 'under the radar? vintage of La Turque is still fairly purple at the core but turning some shades of ruby at the rim (youthful, but starting to develop some tertiary nuance). Mature, but gorgeous scents of violet, blackberry sauce, black currant, dried rubbed beef, high toned spices (like paprika and chili powder) emanate from the glass. The palate is purely mouthwatering, w/ savory, resolved tannins that are seamless and as pure as the heavens above. While not immensely powerful, there is still formidable extract surrounding the wine?s subtle complexities, which really stretch out on the spine tingling finish. Welcome to the right place at the right time; do off-vintages even exist for these Guigal wines? Just about as classy as Northern Rhone Syrah comes.

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
