1997 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne
FRANCE / RHÔNE / CÔTE-RÔTIE
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 95
Full, saturated ruby, by a wide margin the darkest of these '97s. Spicy, high-pitched aromas of cassis, black cherry, licorice, flint and tar. Densely packed but currently tightly wound and dominated by its structure. Shows a restrained sweetness and complicating hints of leather, flint and tar. More tannic than the Mouline or Turque but here, too, the tannins are quite fine. Very long on the palate. A lovely expression of syrah from a very ripe year.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: January/February 2001Wine Advocate | Rating: 98
The nearly perfect 1997 Cote Rotie La Landonne is an amazing achievement for the vintage. An astonishing saturated purple color is followed by scents of licorice, roasted meats, coffee, toasty oak, plums, and blackberries. The wine is extremely smoky, earthy, and terroir-driven. This 1997 offers exceptional expansiveness on the palate, sweet tannin, low acidity, and a ripe, robust finish. One to three years of cellaring is warranted, but it is capable of lasting for two decades.Author: Robert ParkerWine Spectator | Rating: 97
A blockbuster. Lots of oak here, with a petrol, tar, mocha, cigar smoke character, but also amazing sweet and ripe fruit, focused on blackberry, currant and fig. Full-bodied and inky-black, with a huge finish. One for the cellar. 830 cases made.

A beautiful wine, almost Bordeaux like in its depth and smoothness. Some tannin, which bodes well for remaining life, and a very long finish.Author: ScooterSelf | Rating:

opened for my family - not long enough in advance. it was still wonderful. Joe T tasted it 5 days later and thought it was somewhat oxidized but still La Ladonne.Author: Kip S
Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
