  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

Medium ruby-red. Complex, quintessential Napa cabernet aromas of cassis, black cherry, shoe polish, licorice, graphite, dark chocolate and cedar, with suave oakiness. Lush entry, but lively acidity gives the cassis, chocolate and cedar flavors shape and grip. Firm tannins spread out nicely on the spicy, long finish. A youthful wine that should develop slowly in bottle.

Supple and concentrated, with tight currant, mint, sage and cedar. Gains depth and nuance, with a complex aftertaste. 2,100 cases made.

The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beauty. One of Ric Forman's classics, it boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of cassis, dried herbs, cedar, blackberries, and minerals. This medium to full-bodied Cabernet exhibits firm tannin in the finish, in addition to excellent sweet fruit, and a subtle, nuanced personality. Cellar it for 3-4 years and drink it over the following two decades.

Ric Forman, a legend on the Napa wine scene with his integral role in developing the vineyards of Newton and the great Cabernets of Sterling, established his own brand with a debut 1983 vintage. This first wine exceeded anyone's expectations, and Ric has maintained consistent high rankings for his age-worthy Cabernet and Chardonnay, wines of "finesse" and "elegance." Forman also produces a second label called Chateau la Grande Roche.
