1997 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90
Bright deep ruby. Aromas of cassis, blackberry, dark chocolate, licorice and earth. Dense, juicy flavors of dark berries dominated by rather penetrating acids. Tougher and even more backward than the Napa Valley bottling, but longer and sweeter on the back end. Finishes with powerful toothcoating tannins. Both this and the Napa bottling show much stronger acidity than they did from barrel last winter, a few months prior to the bottling.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: November/December 2000Wine Advocate | Rating: 95
The enormous 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a super-powerful, fabulously-concentrated, 50-year wine. Aromas and flavors of blackberry/cassis jam, minerals, and subtle oak are found in this extravagantly rich, gargantuan Cabernet Sauvignon that should age effortlessly for half a century.Author: Robert ParkerWine Spectator | Rating: 92
This one's ruggedly tannic and hard-edged, with lots of cedary oak in the forefront, so patience is required--let the earthy anise and mineral-scented currant flavors meld and the tannins to soften. 3,454 cases made.Author: James Laube

Currently Dunn Vineyards produces around 5000 cases of extremely age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
