  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 90

A backward wine is the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Beatty Ranch. Notes of new saddle leather, tree bark, and red and black currants emerge from this opaque purple-colored wine. Gritty tannin initially causes concern, but as the wine sits in the glass and on the palate, its substantial richness and powerful, full-bodied, concentrated style becomes apparent. Patience is required.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 93

Deliciously ripe and complex, with juicy plum and wild berry flavors framed by pretty, toasty oak. Turns firm and earthy, with a good dose of oak, too, but the fruit pours through. Enough tannin to cellar short-term. 850 cases made.

  • Memphis physicians Michael Dragutsky and David Sloas produced their first Cornerstone Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon in 1991 after having the unique opportunity to buy 4.8 tons of premium Howell Mountain Cabernet from Dunn Vineyards. The wines have received great acclaim ever since. The climatic features of Howell Mountain allow Cornerstone's grapes to ripen later and develop intense flavors. Cornerstone makes both a Napa Valley and Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon; the winemaker is Celia Welch. Cornerstone also makes another label called Stepping Stone.
