This spectacular Shiraz is fashioned from fruit not deemed good enough for Chris Ringland's famed Three Rivers cuvee. It possesses fabulous concentration as well as a sweet, floral bouquet revealing scents of melted licorice, blackberries, and smoke. Humongous in the mouth, with rich, sweet tannin, and an unreal seamlessness and opulence, this wine must be tasted to be believed. Sadly, there are only 65 cases of this beauty.

Aged in 100% new French oak for over three years before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, the '97 Randall?s Hill Shiraz offers impressive concentration and boatloads of sweet fruit. Despite the long sojourn in new oak, the wine has soaked up all the oak with no problem. Deep black completely opaque wine. A huge nose of vanilla, toast, sweet plum, stone, and chalk. Intense and palate staining sweet fruit. Tannins are high but more than offset by fruit concentration. Acidity is well integrated (something that can'tbe said for many blockbuster Aussie Shirazes). Note, there was no Three Rivers Shiraz produced in the 1997 vintage. Starting with the 1998 vintage, wine previously bottled under the Three River label has been renamed as, quite simply, Chris Ringland.

This wine was aged in 100% new oak for 36 months before bottled unfined and unfiltered. Tonite there wasn't a hint of wood. The nose was a beautiful -- yet powerful -- mix of ripe plums, blueberries, and black raspberries. On the mouth was wine was silky smooth with the acidity in perfect balance. The deep dark fruit was also in perfect harmony with the relatively sweet tannins. The finish was an elegant yet well defined 45+ seconds. This was very different than the '99 and '00 Chris Ringland's we've had previously. Much better balance and 1/5th of the cost.

More than half of all Australian wine production takes place in the South Australia region—home to the Shiraz-specializing Barossa Valley as well as revered Riesling zones Clare Valley and Eden Valley. South Australia is too large and diverse to generalize about climate or topography, with both cooler coastal areas and warmer inland sections—but rainfall is generally low throughout and drought is a constant concern.
