The dark garnet-colored 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova's personality is dominated by hard, dry tannin. Notions of sweet cherry fruit, herbs, damp earth, mushrooms, and cedar are followed by an emaciated, attenuated finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

Like finely meshed cashmere. Exotic aromas of plums, incense and Indian spices. Full-bodied, with very fine tannins and a long, caressing, silky aftertaste. A wine with loads of finesse. Give it time. 4,580 cases made.

Man oh man was this drinking good the other night. Smooth as silk with tobacco and wood that was there, but not overpowering. There was plenty of fruit and the tannins had mellowed. This is what drinking wine is all about.

Starts good but drops and finishes poorly at the end of the bottle. somewhat faulty.

Striking, pretty aromatics of fresh cedar, dark chocolate, black currant, iron and briar are unfortunately the wines best attributes. The flavors in the mouth come off as oaky, with angular acidity, as the tobacco and floral elements seem to be submerged in an intrusively tannic structure. The most difficult thing to assess about these wines, as a whole, was to determine whether or not they were drying out or simply unyielding due to an evolutionary phase. I leaned towards the former rather than the later in this effort, which unfortunately wasted a lovely nose on an attenuated palate that put the brakes on when it came to the finish. This was the only wine to receive zero votes by the entire audience. Poor showing.

The Casanova di Neri farm began in 1971 when Giovanni Neri bought a large estate within the territory of Montalcino. Over the years their continuing goal has been the search for and purchasing of land which they believe to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. The result is that today they have about 36 hectares of vineyards divided between four quite distinct areas: il Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, le Cetine in Sant'Angelo in Colle, il Cerretalto and il Fiesole near the farmhouse of the same name facing Montalcino.

Recent accolades include a perfect WS 100-point score for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto and WS Wine of the Year honors for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova.
