($55) Deep garnet core with a ruby rim. Heady sottobosco aroma reminiscent of sweet pipe tobacco laced with the perfumed scent of violets. Deep plum flavor mingles with cherry jam, bitter chocolate and roasted coffee bean; very fresh and clear. The wine offers a superb sense of depth and harmony on the middle palate, and the tannins are firm but ripe. The long, silky finish is graced by an undercurrent of anise. Generous, suave, and delicious. (Vias Imports, New York, NY)

Rich but transparent. Very, very lively, lovely and complete now. A real success.

The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino (tasted twice) possesses a dark plum/garnet color with amber already creeping in at the edge. Aromas of soy, stewed vegetables, old saddle leather, red currants, and sour cherries are apparent in the moderately intense nose. In the mouth, high tannin kicks in, giving the wine a desiccated/attenuated feel. This medium-bodied Brunello boasts more aromatically than in its flavor profile. One to two years of cellaring may be helpful, but this offering needs to be monitored carefully over the next 10-12 years. It is another indication that this Brunello vintage is far more irregular than some of my colleagues have suggested.

Very jammy on the nose, with strawberries and mint. Full-bodied and very polished, with loads of fruit and velvety tannins. Long, juicy finish. Big and rich red from this producer. 11,000 cases made.

Great wine at it's peak. Decanted for 1 hour and opened to smooth tabacco & plum. Great earthiness...

Argiano is a reliable, 30-hectare estate in Montalcino producing modern style Brunello di Montalcino, with Riservas designated for the best vintages. They also make a Rosso di Montalcino and, since 1995, a "Super Tuscan" called Solengo (Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah). The Villa of Argiano is a magnificent construction, built in the Renaissance by the Peccis, a noble family from Siena. The land has been farmed by local nobles since the 1500s. The vineyards are composed of limestone and clay with large quantities of minerals. Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano has owned the property since 1991. She hired both Giacomo Tachis and Sebastiano Rosa.
