  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($90) Intense garnet with ruby reflections. Opens with wonderfully sweet tobacco scents and spicy cedar. In the mouth there are nicely delineated, fresh flavors of anise, mocha and roasted coffee, the whole supported by very soft tannins, and the rather smoky close conveying an essence of raspberry. Although there are no hard edges in this sleek and mellifluous medium-bodied wine, it does not possess quite the depth and concentration of the best Brunellos of this vintage. (Winebow, Hokokus, NJ)

Complex aromas of grilled meat and cherry, with hints of cedar and tobacco turning to plums and flowers. Full-bodied and extremely well-structured, with well-integrated tannins and ripe and concentrated fruit. Superbly made. 2,200 cases made.

The stunning, single vineyard 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli, exhibits more new oak than its sibling, as well as more power, concentration, alcohol, and extract. A deep garnet color accompanies huge, sweet aromas of roasted herbs, red and black currants, cherries, earth, incense, tobacco, and soy. This is a wine to lay away for 5-6 years. This chewy, full-bodied, spectacular Brunello will be at its finest between 2010-2022.

Brooding dark fruit on the nose and palate. Nice finish. This is a very backward Brunello that still needs time to develop. Good balance at this point and will get better.

Good, but seems to be on its way down. Brick color at edges. Still some nice Sangiovese fruit on the nose, but mostly gone on the palate. Crisp acidity and fairly tannic.
