Dark ruby. Intense raisin, roasted coffee bean and toasty oak. Full-bodied, with very chewy tannins and a long, powerful and rich finish. This is layered, young and chewy. Still needs time. This has really taken on weight. Getting better and better.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. 850 cases made.

Good full red. Sweet aromas of dried red berries and tobacco. Fat, sweet and supple, with a rich plummy flavor. Comes across as riper and lower in acidity than the normale Offers a seamless wave of fruit but not the sheer grip of the '96. The tannins reach the back of the tongue. Should give pleasure early.

Not one of the deepest wines but a healthy crimson. Very reticent autumnal nose. Well-melded flavours on the mid-palate but the overriding impression of this wine from the arch-traditionalist is of chewy, classic tannins and noticeably higher acidity than most other wines.

The full-bodied, dark garnet-colored 1997 Barolo Colonnello displays licorice, spice, box, and kirsch liqueur characteristics as well as noticeable acidity. As the wine sits in the glass, aromas of soy, herbs, and incense emerge. It is a tightly-framed, full-bodied, powerful yet close-to-the-vest offering.
