Compared with the flamboyant aromatics of the 1997, Yquem's 1996 plays it closer to the vest, although there is a lot going on. Light gold with a tight but promising nose of roasted hazelnuts intermixed with creme brulee, vanilla beans, honey, orange marmalade, and peaches, this medium to full-bodied offering reveals loads of power in its restrained, measured personality. There is admirable acidity, weight, texture, and purity in this impeccably made Yquem. However, patience will be a virtue.

Half bottle. Deep gold, savoury/sour apricot and orange peel aromas. Intense, viscous, dense and there's a slightly grippy texture on the palate still. Great depth, notes of almond and baked apple and all that sweetness counterbalanced by bracing acidity. Still seems so young, and promises more. (JH)

This leans toward the tropical side, with mango and guava notes out front, while maple, date, blood orange and citrus oil flavors fill in behind. The finish kicks into another gear, taking off with honeysuckle, orange blossom and frangipane accents. Has almost unbridled power today, while maintaining serious cut. A very impressive showing in a rather overlooked vintage.---Non-blind Yquem vertical (July 2014). Drink now through 2035.

Medium gold colored wine with a bright very aromatic bouquet of apricot, stone, vanilla spice, and honey. Nicely viscous with excellent balancing acidity. Not as sweet or as powerful as more vaunted vintages of Yquem but still deft and elegant with lasting flavors. A dinner Yquem.

Strong core of peaches and berries, with a butter/vanilla nose. Light finish, could age more.

Stupendous Yquem although may not have appreciated it fully with all that came before. A powerful yet subtle wine, worthy of its name.

Terrific; coated the whole palate in sweetness but had enough acidity so that it was not cloying; candied fruits and almonds rivalled with some exotic fruits on the palate; a very long finish

Vibrant gold colour. Dense fruity nose with apricot, vanilla and marzipan. Viscous, sweet succulent palate perfectly balanced by the lively acidity. Excellent botrytis flavours that develop for minutes in the mouth: intense sweet apricot, barley sugar and golden syrup. A lovely spicyness at the back of the throat. Incredibly long lingering honeyed flavour in the finish.

Wow. Where to begin. Even on the initial pour the aromas are shocking. It is difficult to describe, besides being Yquem. Notes of caramel and egg custard, the muskiness of Yquem, hints of caramelized sugar. On the palate, dried tropical fruit, brown sugar, caramel, and an immense sweetness that is perfectly counterbalanced by the (somehow) intense acidity. The mouthfeel isn't quite as round as the '95, and this one feels a little more angular. The finish goes on to eternity.

Chateau d'Yquem is world famous for its sweet wine, which commands some of the highest prices on the market. Established in 1593, the chateau is located in the Sauternes region of Bordeaux and is the only property given the highest rating of Premier Cru Superieur. The estate contains a 110-hectare vineyard planted with 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are created from botrytized fruit that is picked by hand in several passes by up to 150 harvesters. The "Noble Rot" (Botrytis Cinera) depletes the water content in the berry, concentrating the natural sugar levels. The resultant wine's high sugar content is matched by high level of acidity, allowing the wine to age for more than 50 years in the best vintages. The opulence of Yquem's youth turns complex, rich and honeyed as it ages. Chateau d'Yquem's second wine, Ygrec Y, is a dry Bordeaux Blanc.
