    Bright, dark red-ruby color. Brooding aromas of black raspberry, licorice, mocha and pungent oak. Currently showing limited flesh and rather strong acidity, and thus comes across as a bit disjointed; the oak and mocha notes repeat in the mouth. Finishes with very good length, some acid to lose, and notes of red fruit and cola. Showing very much like it did late last winter, when I tasted it literally hours after the bottling.

    The 1996 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard reveals the vineyard's high tannin, as well as high acidity, raspberry and cherry fruit, and an intriguing earthy/terroir-driven, compressed personality. I found it somewhat austere and acidic, so I am reserving judgment until I can see another bottle in several years. It appears to be a keeper, but the high acidity combined with the high tannin causes me to worry about the wine's balance.

    Subtle oak aromas frames pretty and still fresh, ripe and complex pinot fruit aromas and pure, intense, beautifully detailed and nuanced medium weight flavors that possess a persistent if slightly edgy finish. This is a lovely effort that can be drunk now or held for another 2 to 4 years. I very much like this.

    Aged Williams Selyem Pinots continue to amaze me. Some bottles are absolutely magical and the 96 Hirsch that we drank last night was a prime example. The wine expanded to a very textured and three dimensional finish filling your nostrils with flowers, and candy. The fruit was perfectly balanced and the finish very refined and layered. One of the best pinot drinking experiences ever! I can't imagine that this wine will improve with any more time, in fact by all guesses I thought it would be past it's prime but we were all surprised with this vibrant pinot.

The emergence of Williams Selyem as one of California's Pinot Noir leaders is an improbable success story. Founders Burt Williams and Ed Selyem started making wine under the Hacienda del Rio Winery label in a garage in Fulton. Their first wine was a 1981 Zinfandel, but very soon after they began their quest for great Pinot Noir. By the late 1980s, Williams had retired as a typesetter and Selyem had left his job as a wine retailer, and they devoted themselves full-time to winemaking. In 1997, John Dyson bought the winery with plans of planting a 20-acre Russian River vineyard and gradually expanded production. Williams continued to make wine into 2000, after which time Bob Cabral, formerly of Alderbrook and Hartford Court, took over as Executive winemaker.

Quality across the board is exceptionally high, with especially notable Pinot Noirs. There are no secrets to Williams Selyem's success: they seek low yield, fully ripened grapes from superb vineyard sources.
