  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 88

At first there's a standoff between drying herb and currant flavors and firm, vibrant tannins. In the end, the flavors and structure compliment each other, making this a complex, satisfying wine that's aging nicely. The best of three bottles.--1996 California Cabernet retrospective.

  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

Bright ruby-red. Lively aromas of boysenberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, violet and mint. Juicy, firm and bright for the vintage, with none of the roasted character shown by so many '96 cabernets. Alluring sweetness in the middle palate. Finishes with firm but graceful tannins.

  • Jancis Robinson | Rating: 16

Quite pale, relatively simple colour. Low key nose. Very slightly feeble. No great subtlety. The texture is a bit jagged too. Not harmonious. And the finish is a little hot and sweet. Drying out. Cool vintage, though to be charming in youth. (LM)

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 90

The medium-bodied 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon displays some of the attractive gravelly notes often found in this wine, along with black currant fruit, lavender, subtle oak, sweet tannin for the vintage, and a well-balanced, pure finish.

Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate's founding.

The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Dedicated stewards of their property, the Novaks have farmed organically since 1985 and have pioneered the restoration of their local watershed.
