In the 1993 to 1996 period, I have had a huge amount of bottle variation with the Groffier wines, ranging from terrific to just plain awful. Indeed the last bottle of this wine that I had was dull, weedy and distinctly toasty yet here the nose was beautifully complex and much less marked the wood, introducing delicious, serious, structured and mouth coating middle weight plus flavors that culminate in a dusty finish of very solid length. This is not a genuinely great wine but it's certainly respectable in the context of the appellation and vintage. Inconsistent notes.

Ruby-red. Sauvage aromas of black raspberry, blood orange, purple flowers, licorice and Worcestershire sauce; lifted by a suggestion of grapefruit. Thick, lush and seamless, but given razor sharp precision by penetrating acids. At once creamy and solid yet amazingly bright. Strong violety flavor carries through to the explosively long finish. Ripe tannins are inundated by velvety fruit. This is really amazing juice.

This dark ruby-colored wine is big, dense and muscular. Produced from 55 year old vines, it displays smoke, blackberry, cassis, stones, beef blood, and Asian spices on the nose. This brooding, fat, broad-shouldered, massively deep, intense, and chewy-textured wine has a highly concentrated and extracted full body. It possesses a tannic (soft, round tannins that will most assuredly melt with cellaring) structure and loads of super-ripe black fruits. This is a stellar example of its highly-reputed terroir. My instincts suggest that the Bonnes Mares may become even more complex in time but there is no doubting the sublime quality of this Beze. Bravo! to Robert and Serge Groffier! This wine was a first-rate example of its terroir. The meticulous work of Serge Groffier (Robert's son) in the vineyards is evidenced by each glassful of nectar from this well-known and certainly soon-to-be-famous domaine. This wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered between December 1, 1997 and mid-January, 1998.

  • With his son Serge, Robert Groffier creates spectacular Pinot Noirs that are the powerful benchmarks of the respective communes. The Amoureuses, with its succulent fruit, is a kaleidoscope of aromatics and flavorsl. The Clos de Beze is an effort unto itself and has a mouth-coating, sweet earthy, gamy, bramble quality that is elegant and classy. The Sentiers and Haut Doix Chambolles offer classic, high-toned red berry and cherry elements that tend toward a bit more elegance and herb in the former and supple, round vibrancy in the latter.
