    Bright deep ruby. Vinous, complex aromas of cassis, roasted plum, spice, licorice, roast coffee, game and grilled bread. Voluminous yet currently rather inexpressive in the mouth; this has a depth and texture not shown in either the '97 or '98. Distinct notes of torrefaction in the mouth. Finishes very long, with well-buffered, ripe tannins.

    Gorgeous aromas of spices, berries, chocolate and raspberries introduce this pedigreed bottling. A glorious young wine that gets better and better as you taste it, it's full-bodied and incredibly silky, with super-integrated tannins and a long, long aftertaste.

    This estate's staff believes that the 1996 Mouton-Rothschild is very complex. I agree that among the first-growths, this wine is showing surprising forwardness and complexity in its aromatics. It possesses an exuberant, flamboyant bouquet of roasted coffee, cassis, smoky oak, and soy sauce. The impressive 1996 Mouton-Rothschild offers impressive aromas of black currants, framboise, coffee, and new saddle leather. This full-bodied, ripe, rich, concentrated, superbly balanced wine is paradoxical in the sense that the aromatics suggest a far more evolved wine than the flavors reveal. By the way, the 1996 blend consists of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc.

    This is the wine that Jean-Marc Quarin wrote about at length in relation to decanting it. This bottle was opened an hour before tasting. Very dark crimson with a little more sign of evolution than the 1995. Solid meat extract sort of nose - very much a notch up from the Clerc Milon and Armailhac. Very concentrated. Quite refined tannins and lovely savour. Worth waiting for, I think, and Philippe Dalhuin is convinced that it needs some aeration before serving. It is pretty solid but there is lots there. Funnily enough this seems a little more burnt on the nose than the drought vintage of 1995. And a bit skinnier.

    It is four years since I last tasted the 1996 Château Mouton-Rothschild. Approaching 20 years old, the nose is now open for business but remaining classic in style, a mixture of red and black fruit, hickory, cedar and just a hint of lavender. It is very complex and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly herbaceous, undergrowth-tinged opening, the tannins just a little abrasive at the moment, exerting a firmness in the mouth. I feel it is almost as if the palate has not kept pace with the aromatics, requiring more substance to fill out the foursquare finish. If you like a slightly more austere Pauillac then you will adore this, though I don't think it quite reaches the potential that it showed a few years ago. Tasted August 2016.

    (77% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot and 10% cabernet franc; pH 3.85; IPT 73; 12.7% alcohol; 83% new oak): Bright ruby with a palish rim. Intense, fragrant aromas of strawberry, iris, coffee, white pepper and bay leaf are lifted by an aromatic spice note; one can recognize the cabernet franc here. Rich, dense and suave, with very pure red fruit, cedar and herb flavors that coat the palate and are nicely carried by vibrant, harmonious acidity. Finishes with outstanding length, noble tannins and a late spicy, floral kick. This outstanding Mouton has improved enormously since its release. Tourbier agrees: "We were a little worried initially that this Mouton seemed too rigid, almost austere. Instead, it did a complete turnaround once bottled, surprising us as well."

    The bottle I opened was fabulous on the nose with aromas of currants, cedar, sweet tobacco, incense, and flowers. It was full-bodied, with very fine silky tannins and similar flavors as the aromas. However, a slightly green undertone came thorough on the palate. It didn’t bother me, but the Italians seemed annoyed with it – even disappointed. Regardless, I scored the wine

    Incredible nose of ultraripe fruit, it's yet subtle and complex. Full-bodied, with very ripe, almost sweet fruit and a long, long caressing finish. Superb. This is edging out the 1995.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2010. — JS

    Brilliant, very well structured, low in tannins, but slightly higher in acidity. Probably close to a top. I would lay it down for 2-3 years, not more.

Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is a First Growth Bordeaux estate located in the village of Paulliac. The chateau was originally known as Chateau Brane-Mouton while in the possession of the Barons de Brane, but was given its current name by Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853. The current owner is Philippine de Rothschild, Nathaniel's great-great granddaughter. Mouton-Rothschild is known for being the first estate to initiate complete chateau-bottling in 1924 and for being the only estate from the 1855 classification to be reclassified (upgraded to First Growth in 1973). Mouton's bottles are unique in that each label is designed by a famous artist of the day. This feature makes Mouton-Rothschild especially attractive to collectors. Not to be confused with the grand vin, Mouton also makes a generic Bordeaux called Mouton Cadet, which is dramatically lower in price and highly distributed. The estate also produces a dry Bordeaux Blanc called Ailes d'Argent.

Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, with annual production varying between 20-25,000 cases. The vineyards are comprised of gravel on a subsoil of marl and clay. Mouton is one of the last Medoc estates to ferment its wine in oak vats. Maturation is done in new oak casks. Mouton is a complex wine with an exotic character and powerful tannins. The bouquet features black currants, cedar, pencil lead, licorice, and spice. Younger vintages appear opaque or deep purple, while older vintages tend to show more garnet. Some of the best vintages of Mouton-Rothschild include 1945, 1953, 1982, 1986, 1995, 1989 and 2002.
