  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 95

Full red-ruby. Profound, multidimensional aromas of cherry, raspberry, cassis, lead pencil, camphor, mocha, tobacco and exotic spices. Extremely rich and full in the mouth but with superb clarity of flavor and grip. A Barolo of great breadth and depth. Firm acids and rich, spreading tannins are thoroughly buffered by rich fruit. Extremely long and lively on the back end. (Marc de Grazia; numerous importers)

The 1996, one of the estate's best, takes things to another level. It shows an outrageous, well-delineated nose of fresh roses, minerals and menthol followed waves of dark fruit and licorice flavors that are just beginning to show the signs of early maturity, with exceptional freshness, length, and harmony. This opens beautifully in the glass, taking on an almost Burgundian elegance. A wine to marvel over. It is hard to resist this now, but it will be even better in another 3-5 years, and age gracefully for another decade, and probably more.

Wonderful aromas of freshly cut roses, with blackberry, strawberry and cream. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins, good acidity and a fresh, fruity finish. Excellent now, but will improve with age.--1996 Piedmont retrospective. Drink now. 1,100 cases made.

    Beyond superb. Stunning.

Long esteemed as a leading producer of the Piedmont, Luciano Sandrone is sometimes mislabeled a "modernizer" of the of the region. In truth, he is more of a relaxer of the mediums that make the wines here long-lived, but difficult to get around in their youth. The wines combine the lovely floral and leather/spice aromatics typical of Barolo with balanced red and dark fruit that is liberally dosed with appealing high-toned acidity.
