Wine Spectator | Rating: 90Dark in color and subtle in aroma, this ripe, full-bodied treasure displays terrific elegance as it lets go, from a firmly tannic structure, a series of blackberry, toasted oak, mineral and spice flavors. Solid, compacted finish, with some drying tannins; requires cellaring. 1,000 cases made.Author: Per-Henrik Mansson
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92Deep, bright red-ruby. Complex, wild aromas of raw crushed blueberry, violet, raw meat and iron. Intense, primal flavors of crunchy berries and powdered stone. Integrated acidity gives the fruit an urgent quality. Quite powerfully structured for aging. Very long and bright on the back end, with tannins nicely supported by extract.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: March/April 1999
Wine Advocate | Rating: 95This saturated and dark colored wine, with its extraordinarily spicy nose of sweet red and black fruits, sent me soaring. This massive, intense, broad-shouldered, masculine, structured, and chewy wine is crammed with super-ripe, rich, and layered blackberries, cassis, licorice, earth, and Asian spices. As if that were not enough, its dense fruit comes roaring back after expectoration, lingering on the palate for nearly a minute. This is an extraordinary Clos Vougeot!Author: Pierre Rovani

Self | Rating: 94It has been said that Clos Vougeot is the epitome of red burgundy, and based on this bottle, I agree. This was a corpulent, dark, masculine wine with plenty of backbone. It was full-bodied and round on the palate, with ample acidity (great for pairing with food), earthiness, and a long finish. The winemaker dialed back the fruit so the other flavors (essentially, what the French call |gout de terroir,| or |taste of the land|) could come through. In 1996, Jadot's version featured dark fruit - plums, black cherries, cranberry, etc. - minerals and a pleasant humus (mushroom) quality. Pat and I visited the vineyard, and its world-famous grand chateau, in 2006. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Visiting the vineyard where the grapes where grown and touching the soil that produced it created for me a special bond with this wine. The moment the wine hit my palate and I inhaled its perfume, I was transported back to Burgundy. The history behind Clos Vougeot is facinating.
