Dark ruby-red. Powerful black fruit and mineral nose suggests tiny dark berries; less animal than normal for this cuvee. Intensely flavored, primary and backward, with bracing but ripe acids. Voluminous but closed in on itself. Great core of spicy, dark berry fruit. Extremely long, palate-staining finish. I get more fruit than soil tones today, and I suspect this wine will retain its fruit for many, many years while the terroir expresses itself.

Huge wine. Aromas and flavors of smoke, earth and green olives are quickly surpassed by tough tannins and a coarse, rustic feel.

The dark ruby/purple-colored 1996 Clos de la Roche reveals beguiling aromas of perfume, violets, blackberries, and juniper-smoked bacon. It is medium-to-full-bodied and offers a chewy-textured flavor profile filled with fresh cherries, licorice, raspberries, road tar, and blueberries. It is massively concentrated, intense, powerful, and possesses an amazingly long, pure finish. This complete wine's harmony and extravagant personality is something to savor.

Wonderfully complex nose of oriental spices and earth with rich, long, deep and intense flavors of staggering length supported by solid but ripe tannins undernearth the velvety veneer.. This is surprisingly accessible for a '96 grand cru and while hardly low in acid, it is not nearly as firm as many wines from this vintage. A simply wonderful effort that should drink well for a long time. Bravo!

  • "Domaine Leroy is a welcome reminder of the difference between the very good and the great." - Michel Bettane, Vins de France

Created in 1988 with the purchase of the 12-hectare Domaine Charles Noëllat in Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Leroy has become one of the most impressive and vaunted properties in Burgundy. Cultivation follows strict biodynamic parameters and the combination of old vine preservation and ultra-low yields produces fruit of unrivaled excellence. The resultant wines are masterpieces of purity, intensity and layered subtlety enhanced by an uncommonly statuesque concentration. The spectacular reviews that these wines consistently receive attest to their incredible and solid quality—they are a lynchpin in any Burgundy enthusiast's collection.
