1996 is particularly successful for Batard-Montrachet. Leflaive's explodes from the glass with highly-expressive mineral, hazelnut and toasty oak aromas. On the palate, this full-bodied, silky and awesomely rich wine has highly-delineated yet fat and layered waves of white fruits, stones and spices. Brawny yet feminine, powerful yet elegant, this gem is a tour de force!

A moderately particular nose of menthol, petrol and hints of sulfur that required more than an hour to entirely dissipate but otherwise and aromas are ripe, intense and fragrant followed by gorgeously detailed, powerful, rich and muscular flavors that possess outstanding length. Curiously for a grand cru from the '96 vintage, this seems quite approachable now but there is so much underlying material that it should drink well for another decade. Consistent notes.

Pumped up and oaky at this stage, showing smoky, toasty, seductive aromas. The fabulous fruit is buried by the oak but still has a wonderful, silky, almost creamy mouthfeel. Shows a mineral character midpalate, with ripe fruit and smoky, grilled and toasty notes.

Very ripe aromas of pit fruits, smoke, grilled nuts and clove. Fatter and thicker than the Bienvenue but also drier. Quite subtle for this wine; solidly built but a bit less massive than some recent vintages. Finishes extremely long and subtle. But the Bienvenue is showing more personality today.

  • "If the blessed slopes of the Cote d'Or are home to the ultimate expression of Chardonnay, then Anne-Claude Leflaive could be regarded as the magician, some might use the word "shaman", who can conjure wine like no other from this propitious terroir." - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
