  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 88

Mature and drinking well, with flavors built around cedary currant, herb, green olive and spicy wood scents. Has excellent balance and length. The best by far of three bottles.--1996 California Cabernet retrospective.

The dense ruby/purple-colored 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard reveals a gorgeous nose of sweet cassis fruit, chocolate, iron, and licorice. Full-bodied, powerful, and weighty, with moderately high tannin, it requires 3-4 years of cellaring. It should last 25+ years.

  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90

Very good deep ruby. Sweet, nutty aromas of chocolate, mocha, mint, graphite and tobacco leaf. Tightly wound but not hard, despite showing flavors of inky licorice and mint. Finishes fairly long, with tongue-coating tannins and a strong note of chocolate.

This wine is surprisingly forward. Medium red color. A drop dead gorgeous nose of oak, cassis, red fruits, and spicy cedar. Pinpoint flavors of cassis and oak. Still plenty of tannin but the wine is drinking well right now.

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
