I had hoped this wine would turn out closer to outstanding, but it is an excellent Cantemerle, if not quite as stunning as I had expected. The wine offers a dark ruby color, and a sweet nose of black raspberries, subtle new oak, and acacia smells. There is fine sweetness and solid tannin in this elegant, symmetrical wine. It is more forward and lighter than it was from cask, but it is a stylish example of Cantemerle.

Slightly darker colour than the 1995. Blackish tinge. Lacks a bit of freshness on the nose. Very fully evolved sweet fruit which could do with just a little more acidity though there are still perceptible, slightly dusty tannins. Veering towards rusty nail. Sweeter than most M‚docs.

Slightly earthy, with meat and blackberry character. Medium-bodied, with light tannins and a simple finish. Fading. I have had this many times recently and it's on the way down. A little disappointing.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now. 22,000 cases made.

Feminine, elegant, delicious! What this wine lacks in power and brute force it takes back in elegance and its lovely perfume. Drink up in a couple of years.

Chateau Cantemerle is an Haut-Medoc property situated along the Route des Chateaux, just north of Bordeaux. It is classified as a 5eme Cru Classe. The history of the estate goes back to the 14th century, when it belonged to the powerful lords of Blanquefort. It has gone through many changes of ownership since that time. The vineyards include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is widely considered an excellent value that could be upgraded to a Third Growth. The annual production for Cantemerle is 25,000 cases and 12,500 for its second wine, Les Allees des Cantemerle.
