($200; disgorged March 15, 2006) Light gold. Dramatic aromas of ripe peach, pear, mango, musky yellow plum, fig, buttery brioche, toasted nuts and baking spices. Rich, deep and expansive on the palate, with powerful, deeply concentrated flavors of yellow peach, tropical fruit, toasted nuts, sweet butter, toffee and marzipan utterly filling the mouth. An endless parade of toasty, decadent fresh and dried fruits defines the finish, with a gentle but insistent mineral undertone providing focus, freshness and lift. This is a must buy for Bollinger fans. (Paterno Wines International, Lake Bluff, IL)

A powerhouse. Big and sophisticated, combining lemon and grapefruit notes with candied fruits, roasted nuts and coffee. Fresh, dry and finely detailed, with finesse and a lingering finish driven by acidity. 750 cases imported.

Disgorged 15 Oct 2007. An 'incredible, exceptional year'. Summer was very very hot and then rain came at the end of August. Cool September nights. 16 Sep start to harvest in very good conditions. Exceptional indian summer. Very high sugar and acid. 70% Pinot Noir. 16 villages. 75% Grands Crus.12,000 kg yield, 10% potential alcohol, initial acidity 10 g/l, 2.92 pH, final total acidity 6g/l.Quite deep gold. Much more developed (and even slightly oxidative) than 1997 on the nose. Strong scent of baked buttered apples. Still quite firm and dense and savoury on the palate. Dry finish. Long. Very complex and open on the nose but still very tense on the palate. Obviously this wine has a long way to go but the nose of this particular bottle was more evolved than I would have expected from the palate. A wonderful wine.

The 1996 R.D. from Bollinger is another superb wine from this vintage. An expressive bouquet of spices, acacia blossoms and perfumed fruit emerges from the wine's silky-textured frame. This generous R.D. is drinking well today, but also has enough freshness to age well for years. It is a great version of one of Champagne's legendary wines.

Still a huge wine that needs time. The pinot power comes through as the clearly dominant one. Fun to taste but not at all ready. Wait

Bollinger is considered one the top Champagne houses. Originally founded in 1829 by Jacques Bollinger and Paul Renaudin, it has been the purveyor to the British Court since 1884, as well as several other European kingdoms. Bollinger has a classic, full-bodied style that reflects its Pinot-dominated cuv‹¨«es. This house is known for its muscular champagnes and R.D. cuv‹¨«es, which are kept for approximately ten years on their yeast lees.
