  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

($85) Medium yellow color. Brooding aromas of pineapple, pine needles, toffee and nuts. Dense, full and quite dry, with penetrating fruit, hints of oak spice, and powerful acids that have not yet come into harmony. But this extremely impressive young Bollinger vintage shifts into a higher gear on the back end, showing even more flavor intensity than it does in the middle palate. This boasts the near-freakish combination of high ripeness and high acidity shared by the best '96s. Builds and builds on the back; one must practically scrape this off the palate. A worthy follow-up to the '95, and likely to develop in bottle for a couple of decades. (Dreyfus-Ashby, New York, NY)

Creamy, evolved flattering nose. Sweet and rich and lemon cream palate - not especially champagne-like in fact. Clean, brisk finish. Good, racy finish.

This is full-bodied, with berry, bread dough and citrus aromas and flavors unfolding on the palate. It's firm and muscular, with depth, intensity and a long, lingering aftertaste. A Champagne for the table.

Bollinger is considered one the top Champagne houses. Originally founded in 1829 by Jacques Bollinger and Paul Renaudin, it has been the purveyor to the British Court since 1884, as well as several other European kingdoms. Bollinger has a classic, full-bodied style that reflects its Pinot-dominated cuv‹¨«es. This house is known for its muscular champagnes and R.D. cuv‹¨«es, which are kept for approximately ten years on their yeast lees.
