Pierre Rovani's archived note quotes Charles Rousseau remarking that the 1996 might turn out superior to the 1990 Clos des Ruchottes. Judging them together, Charles was spot on. This brilliant grand cru has an open, generous, very expressive bouquet with fresh strawberry, iron piping, damp soil notes and later a sprig of wild heather. It is absolutely glorious. The palate is underpinned by firm tannins and decked out with dark berries and sloe, a touch of black truffle peeking its head out from under the covers toward the tannic finish that is like walking down an unlit alley at midnight. I suspect that the 1996 has a long life ahead of it. There is an overwhelming sense of aristocracy here, a Clos des Ruchottes with pretensions towards Clos-de-Beze! Superb. Drink now-2035. Tasted September 2013.

Medium red. Riper aromas of cherry, chocolate, earth, spice and smoke. Brighter and firmer in the mouth, but currently rather closed. This has lovely purity of flavor and gives an impression of stronger acidity. Just a hint of the tart berry note shown by the last two wines. Revealed more complexity as it opened in the glass. Firmly tannic and long.

Nice, delicate red Burgundy, medium in body, showing pretty cherry, raspberry, vanilla, chocolate and green olive notes. Complex, but not very opulent.

Great example of a classic 96 clos des rochottes

Founded just over 100 years ago, Domaine Armand Rousseau is a family-run winery considered to be among the best in Burgundy. Rousseau owns some of the most prestigious plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, and the resulting wines present the perfect distillation of the time-honored traditional methods of winemaking in Burgundy. The formula is simple—superb vineyards plus old vines plus low yields. This translates into wines of outstanding concentration that achieve a Burgundian balance of essential elegance and striking purity.
