($130) Pale, green-tinged color. Incredible shiver-producing 99-point nose combines peach, lemon, iodine and steely, petrolly, slatey soil tones; I was reminded of Chevalier-Montrachet and great Mosel riesling. Full and creamy-smooth but extremely young. This brilliantly minerally wine seems to thicken and intensify after 10 or 15 seconds in the mouth, offering layer upon layer of soil tones. A superconcentrated Champagne that completely avoids the heaviness shown by some '95s.

A gloriously creamy drink which shows no sign of age whatsoever. A real treat.

The hugely impressive 1995 Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs displays ripe apple and pear scents. Broad, rich, deep, and medium to full-bodied, this dense (yet admirable balanced), powerful wine is packed with concentrated layers of white fruits, flowers, and toast. Notes of tangy green apples appear in its awesomely long finish to reinvigorate the palate.

Toast and graphite flavors highlight this elegant, graceful blanc de blancs. It has a subtle power driving the candied berry and dried citrus notes, with a touch of pastry and the ever-present mineral. Fine harmony and finish.

One of the more complex and deep champagne noses I've had. Very close to the complete champagne smell. Sweet bakery, exotic fruits, ripe citrus, roasted coffee and nuts. In a stage where both mature notes and young fruits are represented. Just goes on. Big, almost enormous palate attack with explosive mousse but still very creamy mouthfeel. Good length. Only one small personal problem with this, it's on the sweeter side of the dosage-scale, which for me is clearly noticed when warmed or after more than one glass. Very flattering. I think this is in a very nice spot for drinking right now. However if you like really mature style, you can wait five more years.

Taittinger, located in Reims, is the third oldest Champagne house and one of the few remaining independent, family-owned houses. It produces both fine non-vintage and vintage Champagnes. The prestige cuvee is the vintage Champagne Comtes de Champagne, named after the original Comtes de Champagne, who resided in Reims in the 13th century building subsequently purchased by Taittinger. The blanc de blancs version is produced from 6 Grand Cru sites in the Cote de Blancs. The Comtes de Champagne Rose is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, made by the addition of red wine rather than the saignee. Taittinger's style is elegant and aromatic with complex, creamy richness.
