An old style Pauillac, yet made with far more purity and richness than the estate's ancient vintages, this broad-shouldered, muscular, classic wine exhibits a saturated purple color, and sensationally dense, rich, concentrated, cassis flavors that roll over the palate with impressive purity and depth. The wine is tannic and closed, but powerful and rich. It appears to possess length and intensity similar to the 1996. This is a great young Pauillac.

Boissenot consulted then. 37% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. Mid to light crimson. Light gravelly nose. Sweet start, then quite dusty tannins but an interesting wine with a real fruity core and structure. Round and satisfying.

Dark ruby-red. Black- and redcurrants and smoke on the nose; less oak-spicy today than the '96. Silky and harmonious but currently rather withdrawn. Not quite as sweet as the '96. Here the substantial toothcoating tannins come across as somewhat tougher, but there enough sheer extract for balance. Interestingly, this backward, rather powerful wine suggests the structure and grip of cabernet, while the silkier mouth feel of the '96 suggests a high percentage of merlot.

This is the best Pontet-Canet I have ever tasted. Dark ruby-colored, offering berry, raspberry and dark chocolate character. Full-bodied and very fruity, with big, velvety tannins. A glorious red, this goes on and on on the palate, displaying wonderful structure and fruit. 23,000 cases made.

The extraordinary effort that Alfred Tesseron is making at this property is reconfirmed with each new tasting note I write on Pontet-Canet. Having recently had the exceptionally impressive 1994 in several tastings, it is a pleasure to see this historic estate turning out wines that behave like super seconds rather than fifth-growths.

A little tight at first with hints of pepper. Liberal use of new wood. Needs time to open up and reveal itself.

Full dark color; very lovely ripe fruit on the nose; rich & opulent; elegant & balanced; tannins are softer and more integrated now; multi-levels of elegant complex fruit; med.-full body; a true Pauillac with the 1995 vintage firmness softening; rich, harmonious & delicious. It has developed beautifully in bottle.

Retail purchase, held over 2 years. Great cork. First taste before decanting was tight, tannic and unyielding -- a 1995 for sure. Left in the decanter 2 hours, things get moving. Pale ruby red, medium full. Smoked cherries and saddle leather aromas confirmed on the palate. It keeps building. Good length. I would say another 5-8 years before reaching a peak. In contrast, the 1994 is fruit-forward and fades after a nice rush, and the 1996 is on high evolutionary track, with deeper maturation and a cut above. The 1995 still has a lot to say, and is taking its time. Very nice Pauillac, but not necessarily in the same manner as the best P-C vintages from 2003-2009.

One of eighteen Fifth Growth estates, Chateau Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac appellation, and has one of the largest production volumes in the region. The vineyards date to the early 18th century, and are planted on extremely gravelly, well-draining soil, typical of the best vineyards in Bordeaux. Plantings are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Chateau Pontet-Canet wines are very concentrated, yet elegant, and have tremendous aging potential. The estate produces a second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet, as well as an additional red blend called Benjamin de Pontet.
