1995 Penfolds - Grange (Hermitage)
AUSTRALIA / SOUTH AUSTRALIA /
Wine Spectator | Rating: 97A massive wine, majestic in its proportions, combining power and grace in equal measure. Flavors of plum, blackberry, chocolate and pepper, with hints of cedar, licorice and mint, swirl through the exotic finish. Tannins swarm but don't overwhelm the finish, which echoes all day and night. 9,800 cases made.Author: Harvey Steiman
Wine Advocate | Rating: 92An impressive Grange that may ultimately prove to be underrated, like many wines from this vintage, the 1995, a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a saturated plum/purple color and a sweet blackberry liqueur nose intermixed with cassis, licorice, and new oak. The wine is textured, jammy, full-bodied, with impressive levels of extract, glycerin, and black fruit flavors. It is long, ripe, with unobtrusive acidity and tannin.Author: Robert Parker
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89Bright, deep ruby. Syrupy black and red berries and dark chocolate on the nose. Powerful, thick and concentrated on entry, then a bit hard-edged, with bright acidity and a faint greenness. Rather awkward today, with notes of tar, coffee grounds, soy sauce and maple syrup currently overshadowing the wine fruit. Finishes with substantial, dusty tannins. Disappointing for this bottling. I regret to say that the note I published in Issue 85 was for the excellent '94 Grange, not the '95. Also tasted: 1999 Chardonnay Koonunga Hill South Australia, 1997 Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia*, 1997 Bin 128 Shiraz Coonawarra*.
