  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 97

A massive wine, majestic in its proportions, combining power and grace in equal measure. Flavors of plum, blackberry, chocolate and pepper, with hints of cedar, licorice and mint, swirl through the exotic finish. Tannins swarm but don't overwhelm the finish, which echoes all day and night. 9,800 cases made.

An impressive Grange that may ultimately prove to be underrated, like many wines from this vintage, the 1995, a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a saturated plum/purple color and a sweet blackberry liqueur nose intermixed with cassis, licorice, and new oak. The wine is textured, jammy, full-bodied, with impressive levels of extract, glycerin, and black fruit flavors. It is long, ripe, with unobtrusive acidity and tannin.

Bright, deep ruby. Syrupy black and red berries and dark chocolate on the nose. Powerful, thick and concentrated on entry, then a bit hard-edged, with bright acidity and a faint greenness. Rather awkward today, with notes of tar, coffee grounds, soy sauce and maple syrup currently overshadowing the wine fruit. Finishes with substantial, dusty tannins. Disappointing for this bottling. I regret to say that the note I published in Issue 85 was for the excellent '94 Grange, not the '95. Also tasted: 1999 Chardonnay Koonunga Hill South Australia, 1997 Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia*, 1997 Bin 128 Shiraz Coonawarra*. (Southcorp Wines, Monterey, CA)

Over the past 40 years, Penfolds has earned its reputation as Australia's premier red wine producer and has played a large part in putting Australian wines on the world map. Over the past five years, winemaker Peter Gago has been instrumental in keeping Penfolds at the top of the Austrailian wine industry. Penfolds Grange, the estate's flagship, is characterized by its rich texture, complexity, and concentrated fruit. Penfolds's entire collection spans across many styles and labels including Penfolds Super Premiums, Special Bin Range, Cellar Reserve Range, Bin Range, Thomas Hyland Range, Koonunga Hill Range, Rawson's Retreat Range, and Fortified Wines.
More than half of all Australian wine production takes place in the South Australia region—home to the Shiraz-specializing Barossa Valley as well as revered Riesling zones Clare Valley and Eden Valley. South Australia is too large and diverse to generalize about climate or topography, with both cooler coastal areas and warmer inland sections—but rainfall is generally low throughout and drought is a constant concern.
