This is a magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon, but, lamentably, only 3 barrels (425 magnums) were produced as the vineyard is in the process of being replanted. The wine is powerful for a 1995, with an opaque purple color, and intensely ripe black currant aromas intermingled with smoke, pain grille, licorice, and chocolate. This deep, full-bodied, multi-layered wine is the essence of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Although it reveals plenty of tannin, it is well-meshed in the wine's impressive richness and layered texture. Still youthful and grapy, this Cabernet will develop well for another 15-20+ years.

Tightly wound, with dense, rich, well-focused cherry and currant flavor that's bright and vivid. This is a compact wine with lovely focus on the fruit, and smooth, polished tannins.

  • In 1976, former stockbroker Dick Grace, along with his wife Ann and their children began growing Cabernet Sauvignon from their eponymous vineyard in St. Helena initially just as a hobby. With their first harvest sold to Caymus and subsequently bottled as one of the first single vineyard designated wines in Napa, they embarked upon the path to becoming one of America's wine legends. Besides maintaining the high reputation of their own vineyard and wines, the Graces have contributed to the development of many others, formerly employing Heidi Barrett, and providing budwood for Hartwell Estate, Vineyard 29, and Blank Family Vineyards. With limited production of and unrelenting demand for their wines, they also pioneered the mailing list/waiting list sales model prevalent among many cult cab producers today.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
