Good bright red color. Reticent spicy, floral, iron-scented nose. Extremely dense and powerful; as folded in on itself as a black hole. But the great concentration and wonderful sweetness are easy to see. At least as backward as the Ruchottes, but already shows more sheer power. Pure, peppery finish.

Heady perfumed nose. Thick and treacley and rich and concentrated. Really tingly and rich. Long. Dense and sweet. Structure too.

Roumier's Bonnes Mares is consistently one of the benchmarks of the appellation. The 1995 offering is spectacular: Dark ruby colored with touches of blue and purple, the masculine but elegant nose offers deep, sweet, spicy dark fruits. This wine has an enthralling silky-texture, and finishes with a huge burst of powerful dark berries and a touch of earthiness. Structured for the long haul, this superb bottle should be drunk between 2003-2015.

Vertical Tasting of 18 Roumier Bonnes Mares from Steven Tanzers Cellar with Steve, sponsored by Acker Merrill at Toqueville. Fabulous nose, full and sappy, but not too sweet. May surpass the 96, but more accessible today.

Georges Roumier married his way into some of the best vineyard holdings in the Cote d'Or, back in 1924. He gained a wife from Chambolle and the vineyards as part of the dowry. Grand Cru blocks in Bonnes-Mares, Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, and Corton Charlemagne produce highly sought-after wines year after year. Christophe Roumier, Georges' son, has run the domaine since 1982, when he took over management of his family's 14.2 hectares of vines. He is regarded as one of the finest winemakers in the Cote de Nuit, one who strives to create authentic representations of each of his diverse plots.
