  • Burghound | Rating: 90

Explosive, very forward nose of fat fruit, smoke and white flowers followed by big, powerful and broad flavors underpinned by good acidity and outstanding length. The '95 Bƒtard is not the most nuanced of wines but if power is what you're after, this is an excellent choice.

Sometimes I think Domaine Sauzet is the reference point for Batard Montrachet. Top vintages of Sauzet's Batard exhibit a trademark deep, dense, almost sultry fruitiness. The 1995 is no exception. A muted (from the recent bottling) but super-deep nose precedes a monster wine with huge, concentrated and extracted roasted fruit, buttressed by fabulous flavors of toasted nuts, and very good length. Produced from 30+-year old vines and aged in 50% new oak, this full-bodied blockbuster should have no trouble aging for 15+ years. The wine was bottled three days prior to my visit.

This grows on you. Fresh and vivid, with floral, earthy notes. Quite tough now, its backbone of acidity and fruit will need time to come around. Good intensity and nice balance; a serious white wine with loads of concentration. The new oak is present, but offset well by the fruit. Very long finish. Collect this with patience.--Chardonnay Challenge.

The domaine of Etienne Sauzet is made up of 26 acres, much of it in the heart of the premier crus vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet. Gerard Boudot, owner and winemaker of Domaine Sauzet, is seeking 'maximum finesse and an individual expression of the climat.' M. Boudot, who married the granddaughter of the late Etienne Sauzet, runs the domaine and has modernized and improved the vinification, making the wines of this domaine among the most sought-after white wines of Burgundy.

The estate has been bottling 100% of its production since the early 1950s. Boudot ferments and ages 100% of the premiers crus and grand crus in small oak, one-third new. The average age of the vines is 30-35 years. These are textbook white burgundies, brimming with flavor, yet elegant and well-balanced.
