Greatest Calon-Segur ever made. An absolutely amazing red, this third-growth Bordeaux is remarkable for its layers of berry, violets and perfume. It's full-bodied and very velvety on the palate, with masses of character and an ultralong finish.

I always loved this wine from the first time I tasted it in 1998. It has such purity and power yet it's reserved and beautiful. It's one of the best Calons ever. I drank a bottle with some friends in Manhattan last week and it was the wine of the evening. It was full-bodied with silky tannins and a focused and intense finish. Lots of currant and berry character and hints of dried spices. It's finally opening up and giving real pleasure now like so many 1995 Bordeaux at the moment.

Still very dark ruby and with an admirably complex, evolved nose that is more mineral than fruity. Very classic emissary from its appellation with marked acidity and still some tannin. Firm, correct, I served it in honour of the late articlesa20110906.html target= title= onclick=>Mme Capbern Gasqueton. You could serve this already if you took care with the food and any other wine served alongside, ensuring that both were relatively chewy.

This has a very backward nose with an almost animal-like intensity. The Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant with cedar, smoke and sous-bois characteristics coming through. Superb definition with a little more |attack| than the 1996 (which is not dissimilar in style.) The palate is extremely backward, almost chunky and tannic, much more primal than the '96 with blackberry, briary, bilberry complemented by hawthorn and leather. Very well balanced towards the charming finish which is developing an enthralling sense of harmony and effortless. A wine that put Mdm. Gasqueton on the map and still with so much to give in future years. Drink 2015-2040. Tasted November 2008.

Clear. Deep ruby. No garnet rim despite being 13 years old. Clean, medium to pronounced nose of dark plums, capsicum, and hints of leather, tobacco, peas and, as the wine develops in the glass, savoury (meaty) notes. Still developing. Dry. High acidity. High and velvety tannins. Medium plus intensity. On the palate, more notes of blueberries. Medium to long finish. Medium alcohol. Fine quality. Premium priced. Can drink now if decanted for around 1 hour but should wait at least another 5 years to enjoy its full potential.

Consumed in Bonnie home. Tasted along with 2001. I like 2001 better. As I have said many times since I first tasted this wine, the 1995 Calon-Segur is one of the great sleepers of the vintage (I bought the wine as a future for a mere $250 a case). The wine has closed down completely since bottling, but it is a sensational effort that may ultimately merit an even higher score. The wine is opaque purple-colored. With coaxing, the tight aromatics reveal some weedy cassis intertwined with truffles, chocolate, and beef blood-like aromas. On the palate, there is an element of sur-maturite (1995 was an extremely late harvest at Calon-Segur), fabulous density and purity, and a boatload of tannin. This deep, broodingly backward, classic Bordeaux will require a decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2035.

Delicious. Not as young as the date would suggest, but benefits from a decant.

Drank a mini vertical of '95 and '96 Calon Segur. Both wines were amazing, but in different ways. The '95 seemed bolder, whereas the '96 was mellower.

Drinking beautifully. Give it a couple of hours to breath. Very balanced, nicely integrated tannins, I would say another 5+ years before it starts to lose anything, not 20

Medium ruby with narrow garnet rim. Intense, developing aromas, with somewhat coarse tannins on the palate. Not a lot of fun without food. The fruit may outlast the tannins, so another few years of bottle age could be in order.

Nose: green pepper and olive. Almost to point of exaggeration. Palate: muscular, firm tannins. Good balance and structure. Earthy. Cedar wood and black olive. Occasional note of sweet tarts candy late in the finish. Long finish. Improved with decanting.

Old fashioned Bordeaux wine: Tight and closed with rich tannins masking the fruit. Chewy leather feel. Will probably improve with some time but not substantially

This is an interesting wine. It's been about four years since I tried it, and it was tight and tannic then. It's loosened a bit but it' still has an edge. It needed an hour to open, after which it had nice fruit and acidity with plenty of tang and tannins. This is a good bottle now, but I think it still needs more time. Perhaps another few years? Rating it as it is today, but I expect it will get better with a bit more time to mellow and will improve by a few points. Color is deep purple, nose was reticent but opened up with time to have a bit of musk, some raisin and some plum and maybe a bit of camphor or something a tad astringent. All around, a good wine, just a little frustrated it's not ready after 17 years! Plenty of tannins to last though...

Chateau Calon-Segur is a 3eme Cru Classe estate located in St. Estephe. The property consists of a 74-hectare vineyard that grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The recognizable heart motif on the labels stems from the original owner, Marquis de Segur, who declared, "My heart belongs to Calon," despite owning such estates as Lafite and Latour. Since 1894, the chateau has been owned by the Gasqueton family. Recent successful vintages include 1995, 1996 and 2000. Calon-Segur is typified by its notable strength and concentrated fruit.

Located in the southwest of France, Bordeaux is the single largest fine-wine-producing region in the world, with more than 15,000 growers spread over 57 appellations and more than 700 million bottles produced annually. The region boasts a two-thousand-year winemaking history and some of the wine world's most recognized and highly sought-after names. Red Bordeaux blends comprise eighty percent of production, but dry and sweet whites are also well-known. The region is divided into the Left and Right Banks (of the Dordogne River); Cabernet Sauvignon prevails in the former and Merlot in the latter.
