  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

Loads of plum and dark chocolate aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with firm yet silky tannins and a long, subtle finish. Reserved and refined. Seamless.

Opaque ruby-red. Fruity, expressive aromas of black raspberry, nuts and fresh herbs; distinctly cooler than the '97 and '96. Velvety and sweet in the mouth, with an extraordinarily lush texture for the vintage. Extremely harmonious from the outset, with nicely integrated acidity and sweet, slow-to-build tannins. Great finishing fruit. Production here fell sharply beginning with this vintage because of replanting.

The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon is cut from the same mold as the profound 1996, displaying astonishing levels of black fruits (the usual suspects - blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and cassis), phenomenal concentration, and virtually perfect balance and equilibrium. I recently wrote an article in Food and Wine magazine itemizing the characteristics of a great wine. They are: 1) the ability to please both the palate and the intellect, 2) the ability to hold the taster's interest, 3) the ability to offer intense aromas and flavors without heaviness, 4) the ability to taste better with each sip, 5) the ability to improve with age, and 6) the ability to offer a singular personality. This wine satisfies every one of those requirements. I often wonder if I get too excited about wines such as this. Yet time is on their side. I truly believe that in 20, 40, or 60 years, when the history of what appears to be a golden age for California wines is analyzed, these wines, and the work of their winemaker, will be even more admired and appreciated by future generations than they are today.

    Wine of the night
    Author: Conrad K
Located high above Lake Hennessy, the vineyards which supply this outstanding expression of Napa's bounty are some of the few influenced by the moderating influence of a relatively large body of water. At 1,500-feet, the high altitude of the Pritchard Hill area also serves to produce low yields of premium grapes that provide the dense, concentrated, black fruit aspect of this enormously complex 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1987 by Don Bryant, the wines were originally made by Helen Turley. The current winemaker is Marc Gagnon with Michel Rolland consulting.
