  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

A tightly wound wine from a classic vintage, with a firm band of cedar and spice wrapped around a core of ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry. It fans out to reveal hints of olive and smoke, firming on the finish. Best from 2002 through 2011. 15,000 cases made.

Deep ruby. Wild aromas of cassis, blackberry, meat, coffee and menthol. Sweet, plush and showy; impressive mouthfilling intensity of flavor. Finishes very long and chocolatey, with ripe tannins. Strong juice.

Production: 18,000 cases; Alcohol: 13.98%; Blend: 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc; Harvest Dates: October 9 to November 16. Made from Bancroft Ranch (34%), Tre Colline (36%), Chabot (19%) and the rest from the St. Helena Home Vineyard, the 1995 is not as complex as the 1994, but it is loaded with fruit. Still an adolescent in its development, it possesses a dense purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of blackberries and cassis, a youthful mouthfeel, good acidity, full body, abundant fruit and glycerin and a long, heady finish. This vintage was somewhat forgotten because of all the hype surrounding 1994, but it has turned out to be a great one for Bordeaux varietals in Napa. This stunning Private Reserve should continue to drink well for another 15 or more years.

Really singing now, with lots of kirsch and black currant. A little barnyard and oak on the nose, with dill and white pepper on the very long finish. Smooth, silky midpalate; adicity in perfect balance. A well made wine, built to last.

Upon initial opening, the smell was off but after decanting and letting it sit for an hour, re-tasted and it was fabulous. Great color, rich flavor, slightly tannic, very little aftertaste. Should be allowed to breathe for several hours - feel free to taste over that time period and taste it come alive.

Very well balanced tannins and fruit, opened up and smoothed out considerably after one hour decanting, beautiful deep purple color, has several years left on it. Tasted with a 1994 Beringer Private Reserve, 1995 slightly better, more full bodied and spicier with a very good finish.

Xmas04: nice wine, no signs of the green pepper from last time, meaty and spicy (12/04)
