Now at 21 years old, the Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1993 still has a youthful appearance with little sign of aging on the rim. The nose is really quite stunning: Dorset plum, wilted violet, cold, wet limestone and a touch of bay leaf. This is a precise nose, one that keeps everything under tight control, but at the same time sensual and approachable. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus fresh opening. This is extremely focused, fresh and linear with superb mineralite that takes time to really be uncovered in the glass. To quibble (a little), perhaps you could argue that the aromatics demonstrate more complexity and nuance than the palate, but it remains a very fine 1993 grand cru that will stay on its plateau for another 10-15 years.

Spicy, exotic aromas and flavors wrap themselves around a powerful core of mouthfilling black cherry and plum. Jam-packed, and extraordinary for its length and integration of fine tannins. Should be smoothed out by 1999, but will probably be best after 2002 to 2004.--Pinot Noir Challenge.

Still remarkably primary with a nose that is the crystalline essence of black cherry pinot sap though there are the initial hints of secondary aromas and spice notes now in evidence. Massively structured and opulent thick flavors with dense, ripe tannins that are completely buffered by all the extract. This is flat out great and still very much a baby though again, there are just the initial signs of maturity. In my view, this is the best de Vog‚ Musigny since at least '71 and is a monument in the making as it will live for 50 years without breathing hard, particularly in magnum format. Multiple, and consistent, notes from 750 ml only.

After a short while, the nose opened to reveal untold depths of richness and complexity, befitting the Vogue Musignys. A strong, not subtle, but rather racy Grand cru, at least compared, as we did, to the more stately '91.

GREAT wine. Brought this to a Vogue Musigny vertical. It was every bit the same level of pedigree as the 1971 and 1978. Could potentially surpass the 1978. The abundant structure of the vintage is apparent, but the sheer balance and concentration and sophistication of this wine is notable. Will be great.

Still not showing much, at least for me.

Comte de Vogue is often considered the greatest wine estate in Chambolle-Musigny. It traces its history back to 1450 and amazingly, after 20 generations, the same family still runs the show. The domaine owns 7.25 hectares of the Le Musigny vineyard; these average 40 years old and are labeled Vieilles Vignes. The property also includes smaller holdings of Bonnes-Mares and Premier Cru Chambolle-Musigny. The blending of tradition and modernity in winemaking has resulted in wines that are revered by critics and wine lovers around the world.
