Aromatically complex, with enticing floral, perfumed fruit and spice, cedar and cigar box scents. Delivers a rich, complex core of earthy currant, mocha, exotic spice and fresh leather flavors. Tannins are well-integrated, with a long, vibrant, pleasantly earthy aftertaste.--1993 California Cabernet retrospective. 25,500 cases made.

Deep garnet-brick colour. Fragrant aromas of dried cranberries, prunes, cinnamon and cumin giving way to subtler earthy notes of leather and tar. A lot of discernable fruit remains on the palate framed by crisp acidity and a medium level of grainy tannins. Very long, layered finish. Tasted April 2009.

Still quite youthful crimson though a slightly weak rim. The oak seems a little dominant on the nose. Sweet, exotic, tealeaf flavours. Nice balance but a little muted somehow. Tannins still very much in evidence. 41 day skin contact is a pretty serious extraction program!

Past its prime, but still pleasant to drink and enjoy. If you have some and haven't poured it yet, hurry up!

Opus One Winery was founded in 1979 as a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The wine is a collectible, Bordeaux-style blend that commands some of the highest prices in the Napa Valley. The winery itself is a building that is meant to be an expression of the wine by mixing elements of classical European and contemporary California style. Opus also produces a second wine, a non-vintage Cabernet called Overture.
