Aromas of mint and blackberries with hints of freshly cut cedar. Full and chewy, with angular tannins and a slightly hot finish. Drying out a little.Author: James SucklingWine Advocate | Rating: 95
The 1993 should be as prodigious as the 1992. It is an opaque purple-colored wine with spectacular ripeness, purity, and potential. Dense, full-bodied, with a chocolatey, toasty, mineral, and blackcurrant-scented nose, this wine has a rich, full-bodied, chewy texture nicely buttressed by ripe tannin. In addition, the wine reveals more noticeable tannin in the finish, particularly when it is compared to the 1992 or 1994. This is another 20-25 year wine.Author: Robert Parker

1993 was considered a weak vintage in Napa primarily because '93 was sandwiched in between 1992 and 1994-7. This wine shows how a producer dedicated to the highest quality can triumph over difficulties less producers succumb to. The '93 drinks beautifully right now but shows no signs of slowing down. Powerful fruit in the nose and mouth coupled with attractive herbal nuances. Tannins are more prominent then in the best vintages of Harlan (the skins of the grapes were drier in '93 and produced more tannic wine.)Drink Dates: 2003-2015Author: Daniel B

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
