Seems to be drying out and lacking fruit concentration, with mature earth, anise, cedar, green olive, currant and pencil lead flavors preceding very dry, chewy tannins.--'92 California Cabernet retrospective

The stunning 1992 Cabernet Sauvignons include the less minty, but opulent, rich, full-bodied, highly-concentrated, creamy-textured 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard. Long known for its minty, chocolate-scented nose, the 1992 displays plenty of cassis and chocolate, but less mint than usual. It can be drunk young and cellared for 15-20 years.

A brilliant medium garnet with thin, clear legs ? the color really is quite remarkable and shows little evidence of aging. An entrancing perfume of chocolate, a bit of sandalwood, cherry, light well-crafted oak, sweet herbs, and almost exotic toasted coconut (not sweet but savory coconut rather like coconut milk as used in Southeastern cuisine). Velvety with gossamer tannin and completely integrated acidity. Backus is a hillside vineyard located east of the Silverado Trail and south of Oakville Cross Road. When this wine was made the Backus Vineyard had about seven acres of Cabernet under vine. (The planted acreage substantially increased after 1996 when Phelps bought the vineyard.) 96% Cabernet and 4% Merlot (the Merlot was not from Backus) that was aged for 25 months in French oak. Seemingly ageless, this wine can be drunk now with great pleasure or held for up to another decade.

Bottle was corked. I love Phelps Backus but I'm finding that older bottles that are still drinkable are very hard to find. Storage seems to be an issue and brokers will sell it no matter the quality.

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
