5% Cabernet SauvignonQuite bricky at the rim. Aromatic with a clear eucalyptus note but pretty complex with a herbal and mocha hint, even lavender but also leather. More itense and riper cassis than the 1990. Firm, just a little chewy but soft and chocolately tannin smoothness and then a silky finish. Very very long. More showy and less elegant than the 1990. Nice freshness. (JH)

Medium brick colored with a garnet core, the 1991 Grange has a wonderful perfume of black and red fruits preserves, prunes, figs and plum preserves with suggestions of licorice and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, rich, powerful and spicy right through the long finish, this Grange still has loads of life and should cellar for another 10-20 years.

Rich, chewy, spicy and full of currant and blackberry character, this is distinctive for the harmony that's beneath the hedonistic fanfare of flavors. A stunning wine with all the Grange characteristics. --Penfolds Grange vertical. 6,338 cases made.

Another outstanding Grange. Smokey, with cherries and almost syrup like on the nose. Rich and lush on the palate with some firmish tannin but drinking now and has 20+ years to melo out. Reminds me of the 1976 Grange on the nose. Unreal.

Coconut. Coconut. Dense and full bodied. Jammy fruits mixed with toasty oak. Top of its drinking plateau. The bottle was purchased in Australia. Smooth tannins. Yumm

It was all there. Would benefit from a couple of hours decanting. Blueberry, graphite great fruit and 50-60 second finish

Over the past 40 years, Penfolds has earned its reputation as Australia's premier red wine producer and has played a large part in putting Australian wines on the world map. Over the past five years, winemaker Peter Gago has been instrumental in keeping Penfolds at the top of the Austrailian wine industry. Penfolds Grange, the estate's flagship, is characterized by its rich texture, complexity, and concentrated fruit. Penfolds's entire collection spans across many styles and labels including Penfolds Super Premiums, Special Bin Range, Cellar Reserve Range, Bin Range, Thomas Hyland Range, Koonunga Hill Range, Rawson's Retreat Range, and Fortified Wines.
More than half of all Australian wine production takes place in the South Australia region—home to the Shiraz-specializing Barossa Valley as well as revered Riesling zones Clare Valley and Eden Valley. South Australia is too large and diverse to generalize about climate or topography, with both cooler coastal areas and warmer inland sections—but rainfall is generally low throughout and drought is a constant concern.
