Full medium-deep red. Highly perfumed nose combines raspberry, woodsmoke, bacon fat, game and pepper, with a distinctly liqueur-like quality: classic high-pH Cote-Rotie aromas. Thick, round and lush, with compellingly sweet raspberry, gunflint, game, woodsmoke and mint flavors. An extremely suave wine that's aging slowly and gracefully. Shows surprising grip for a wine this smooth. A quintessential La Mouline that was approachable virtually from the time it was released.

The most accessible of the LaLas, from a great northern Rh“ne vintage. Very lively, shaded ruby. Very dense and savoury and attractive nose. The most luxurious, rich, hedonistic seducer on the nose. Like essence of C“te R“tie. Rich black pepper - with a drop of syrup thrown in. Big, bold and long. Great richness but unlike anyone else's rather purer C“te R“ties. No shortage of pleasure though. Like brambles and sandpaper. Very clean finish.

The black/purple-colored 1991 La Mouline appears to be a perfect wine in the making, with a staggering bouquet of violets, bacon fat, sweet cassis fruit, and toasty oak. The wine exhibits superb density. It is tasting even richer and more concentrated than it did during its first several years of life. With 8% Viognier in the blend and made from extremely low yields (only 400 cases produced), it is a phenomenal wine. I find it more seductive than the nearly perfect 1990. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. Last tasted 6/96.

  • Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
