As for the 1991, 6,500 cases were produced of this potentially perfect wine. While this vintage of Dominus contains no Merlot in the blend, every time I taste it I am reminded of a great vintage of Petrus such as 1982, 1989 or 1990. Although different, the 1991 Dominus possesses extraordinary intensity, remarkable opulence, and amazing fruit extraction, all welded to a full-bodied structure. The wine's sensational purity and inner-core of depth must be tasted to be believed. The 1991 will be approachable young because of its sweet tannin, yet it exhibits the potential to last for 25 years. Perhaps 1994 will rival it, but for now, the 1991 is unquestionably the greatest Dominus, as well as a potential legend in the making.

Magnum. A really excellent wine. Rich, round and subtle with an attractive warm earthiness underneath but no suggestion of overripeness. Great balance and life. I think I underrated its longevity in the two previous notes on this wine.

Very saturated dark red-ruby. Youthful, supercomplex aromas of plum liqueur, currant, brown spices, leather and chocolate, plus an ineffable animal/vegetal/mineral element. Wonderful penetrating sweetness in the mouth; dense, thick, very intensely flavored and pungent. Sharply delineated. Perhaps not quite the sheer size of the '94. Finishes extremely long and focused, with fine tannins and a note of superripeness.

Wonderful complexity and youthfulness, from the initial aromatics to the follow-through on the finish. Serves up a mix of complex currant, tobacco, earth, brick, mineral and cedary tobacco. Holds its focus and finishes with a long aftertaste without being too heavy or tannic.--'81/?91 California Cabernet retrospective.

A beautiful wine, like drinking a very good Bordeaux. Don't think it will get any better, but should have 3 years left.

Consumed at wine tasting. (1st flight was horizontal, comparing 1994 CA Bordeaux blends. 2nd flight was vertical, comparing different Dominus vintages. This wine was the oldest of the 2nd flight.) Color: Brick red, similar to others in the flight. Aroma: Less aromatic than others in the flight. Flavor: Smooth. Possibly favorite of the 2nd flight.

Dark ruby, no hints of lightening. Gorgeous nose of strawberries, earth, and a hint of herbaceousness. Blind I would have guessed the 86 pichon lalande. Still tastes very young, with velvety mouthcoating tannins. Very plush in the mouth despite the tannic structure. Reasonably long finish. Not a lot of acidity, which to my taste makes it taste a little flabbier than the best bordeaux. Very good wine, but a little disappointing relative to expectations and the nose.

Drank at CP. First taste was pretty bad, but we decanted it. Took about 45 minutes to open up, but it became a real treat to drink. We loved it!!!

Drank with Sergio and Tui. Decanted about 2-3 hours. This bottle may have had some heat damage, did not show nearly as well as previous bottle last year (95pts). Finish was a bit abrupt and showed signs of seepage from truck delivery. Stil was very full and very big. Lovely cassis and minerality. Very old world style, best CA for me. If finish came around would have put in the A rank, but for now will not rate as think the wine is better than this bottle showed.

Purchased 2 bottles from POP's 10/05. (020000) Had first bottle in May, 2007. One of the most memorable (if not the most memorable) wines I have had. Amazingly mellow and food friendly in a classic left bank Bordeaux style. Although richly textured now with 16 years of age on the bottle, still has plenty of fruit and will definitely last another decade at its peak (maybe longer?). A true classic. ***** Purchased another 3 bottles from JJ Buckley 11/07. (0225)

Since its inaugural vintage in 1983, the wines of Dominus Estate have been crafted in a traditional and terroir-driven style by the luminous Christian Moueix of Petrus fame. Unable to pass up the change to make what he called the Haut-Brion of Napa, Moueix came to own the legendary Napanook Vineyard through a partnership with and eventual buyout of Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, the daughters of John Daniel of Inglenook Winery. Moueix eschews irrigation, acidification, and the heavy usage of oak (18 months in French barrels, with only 1/3 new) common amongst his Napa colleagues. The exceptional terroir of Napanook in combination with his skillful viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques have repeatedly resulted in some of the most broadly enjoyable Napa Cabs available and clearly place Dominus in the upper echelon of this genre. Since 1996 the estate has released a second wine called Napanook.
