A polished, rich and ripe red, this Rayas is just sensational, offering chocolate and spice and a minerally wet earth character. Tempting now, but worth cellaring. Even better than when reviewed upon release.--Chateau Rayas vertical. 2,000 cases made.Drink Dates: 2010-2020Author: Per-Henrik ManssonIssue: Dec 15, 1999Wine Advocate | Rating: 100
As for the 1990, I have had the good fortune to drink nearly three cases, and it has been one of the triumphs of my cellar. A mere 1-2 years ago, I enjoyed a succession of perfect |100 point| bottles, but the last several bottles have merited 96-100 points, perhaps revealing the direction of this wine's evolution. Nevertheless, this is riveting stuff. A legendary Rayas made from extremely ripe Grenache, it exhibits notes of over-ripe kirsch, raspberries, cherries, game, licorice, and tobacco. This unctuously-textured, thick, juicy Chateauneuf must tip the scale at 15.5% alcohol. It is truly a Rhone Valley monument. Owners, however, should consume it over the next 8-10 years.Drink Dates: 2003-2013Author: Robert ParkerIssue: E2003Jancis Robinson | Rating: 19
Mature ruby with a pale rim. Sweet and rich and vibrant. Heady and medicinal in a thoroughly good way. Great freshness. Jewels and spice. Bravo! Still lots of life!Drink Dates: 2005-2019Author: Jancis RobinsonJeb Dunnuck | Rating: 100
Truly otherworldly, the 1990 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve possesses stunningly perfumed and intense aromatics of kirsch and raspberries intermixed with sweet spice, roasted herbs, leather and licorice notes. Very ripe and beautifully complex, the palate is full bodied and a hedonistic dream that just expands in the mouth. There’s amazing sweetness, low acidity and an unbelievable, lush, thick and yet light texture that carries into a monster finish. Firing on all cylinders and as good as wine gets!Drink Dates: 2009+Author: Jeb DunnuckIssue: 4/8/2009

Purple in color. Low rim variation. Raspberry, Black currant (cassis). Full bodied. Fleshy texture. Long finish.Drink Dates: 2008-2018Author: Kirk B163
This legendary cellar grew to its fame through the efforts of the late Jacques Reynaud and is now run by his nephew, Emmanuel. The reds are mainly Grenache and reveal a solid concentration that reacts to aging by extracting layer upon layer of subtle texture and complexity. Most people tend to rave about the Rayas, but in our estimation, the Pignan (which is made up of the cuvees that didn't make the Rayas cut) is a terrific second wine that is such an extraordinary value that it should be purchased in case quantities. Often this unassuming wine can eclipse many a top Chateauneuf.
