Intense and still oaky wine with the sort of vanilla sweetness one associates with American oak (though I'm sure Guigal uses only French). For the moment the tannins are so rough that there's a certain rusticity about this wine. If you have some, don't open it for a while. Reviewed: February, 2001

The richest of the crus in this monumentally rich vintage, offering ripe plum, smoke and game flavors and full, muscular tannins. Not as exuberant as La Mouline at this stage, but should last longer. --Guigal Cote-Rotie vertical.

The 1990 La Landonne is a perfect wine! Fortunately, more than 800 cases were produced. It possesses an opaque black color, and a huge, truffle, licorice, cassis, and peppery-scented nose. While it is one of the most concentrated wines I have ever poured across my palate, it is perfectly balanced, with adequate underlying acidity, huge extraction of ripe fruit and tannin, and a phenomenal 70-second or longer finish. This is the essence of Syrah! Give this monumental wine 7-10 years of cellaring; it will last for 40-45 + years. Reviewed: December, 1996

Gorgeous garnet in color with a lot of pronounced legs. Aromas of stone, burnt wood and garrigue. Very well integrated on the palate with some clove and cinnamon. Very smooth going down, with a finish 30+ seconds at the stinginess measure. Wow. Served under slightly too warm conditions -- might merit perfect score under ideal circumstances. Nicely mature, might get a little better if left alone for a while

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
