    One of the great modern-day Bordeaux, the 1989 Clinet still has a saturated purple color and a sweet nose of creme de cassis intermixed with incense, licorice, smoke, and mineral. As the wine sits in the glass, more blueberry and blackberry notes emerge, intermixed with some toasty oak, earth, and spice. This spectacularly concentrated, full-bodied, multi-dimensional wine is the stuff of dreams.

    Starts well on the palate but slows down. Lovely aromas of cherry and dark chocolate and hints of earth and vanilla. Full-bodied and velvety, with medium fruit and a medium finish. Slightly one-dimensional. Give it time.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal.

    The 1989's aroma (believe it or not, the first bottle in the blind tasting was badly corked) jumps from the glass, offering up pure scents of flowers, black-raspberries, currants, vanillin, and truffles. Full-bodied, with a seamless texture, fabulous concentration, a massive degree of richness, but no heaviness or awkwardness, this remains one of the most profound young wines I have ever tasted. Its sweetness of fruit and layers of flavor, combined with its remarkable texture are the stuff of legends. Both of these wines are approachable (their high Merlot content ensures them softness), yet they remain largely unevolved. If readers like them young, do not hesitate to drink a bottle or two. Ideally, both the 1989 and 1990 vintages will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring. Given the 1989's additional flavor extraction and length, it is a 25-30-year wine.

Chateau Clinet is located at the highest point of the Pomerol Plateau on the famous Gunz gravel terrace, origin of the appellation's most prestigious crus. Clinet's reputation as a fine wine producer was already established by the 19thC. The property belonged to the Constant Family before passing into the hands of the Arnaud Family, who were at the same time owners of Chateau Petrus. From 1900 to 1991, Clinet belonged to the Audy family, a large Bordaux negociant.

The arrival of managing director Jean-Michel Arcaute in the early 1980s marked a real turning point in the wines of Clinet. He introduced revolutionary changes to the status quo: green harvest, leaf thinning, delaying harvest until physiological ripeness had been reached and reducing the percentage of the Cabernets in favor of the more suitable Merlot, among other important modifications.

Jean-Michel Arcaute remained on as managing director after Chateau was purchased by the GAN insurance company in 1991. In 1998, Chateau Clinet was bought by Jean-Louis Laborde who devoted all his energy and vision to pursuing the evolution inspired by the preceding owners. The estate has been run since 2003 by his son, Ronan. Ronan Laborde and his winemaker Roman are the youngest team in the Union des Grands Crus.
