    Served blind alongside the 1989 and with just a bit more structure and more gaminess. I thought it the more obviously Beaucastel with masses of evolution on the nose but still a bit of grip on the finish.

    Two great back to back vintages are the 1990 and 1989. The more developed 1990 boasts an incredible perfume of hickory wood, coffee, smoked meat, Asian spices, black cherries, and blackberries. Lush, opulent, and full-bodied, it is a fully mature, profound Beaucastel that will last another 15-20 years.

    Not as appealing as the '89, our Wine of the Year in 1991, but it's a generous, concentrated, intensely fruity Chƒteauneuf that blends mouthfilling flavors with complex cedar, spice and leather accents. Sturdy tannins and solid acidity mark this as a good candidate to cellar. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 17,000 cases made.

    Consistent notes with significant improvement in bottle typical of Beaucastle. Beautiful mahogany-brick red color; less of the typical Beaucastel barnyard bret than in other vintages; profound smoky/gamey nose w/leather tobacco & exotic spices; similar flavors on the palate; soft integrated tannins; rich, complex and well-balanced; a masculine style wine but with no hard edges; amazingly long, rich & complex finish. A great Beaucastle that is fully mature now and will continue to drink well for several more years.

    Forward nose of cedar & dried fruits with beautiful balance on the pallet. Lingering after taste with sufficient fruit to age well for the near future.

    Light garnet, a little bricking at the rim. This has an amazingly complex and aromatic nose. Definite notes of smoked meat, coffee, chinese five spice, tomato ketchup and polished wood accompany sweet underlying blackberry fruit. Medium bodied with good acidity and smooth integrated tannins. Beautiful balance in the mouth. Rich, defined flavours of leather, blackcurrant, coffee, dark chocolate and bacon fat. Evolves on the palate and lingers in the throat for minutes. Fabulous.

    The color showed its age but the nose and palate were still very primary. Not nearly the barnyard flavor/nose that I recall from the 89. Not bad, but certainly not the wine I was hoping. In a dumb phase?

    Was a bit musty on the nose when opened and it took a bit of time to dissipate; once it did it was rather mellow with nice black fruits and spice; a bit past its best but still drinking well

Chateau Beaucastel, run by the Perrin brothers, is regarded as one of the best estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. At 131 hectares of vineyards, it is also one of the largest estates in the region. It is atypical of the appellation in its production techniques. It is one of three estates to produce and vinify all 13 grapes permitted under the regulations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Also, unlike most estates, Beaucastel prefers to use as much Mourvedre in its blend as Grenache. As one of the first estates to practices organic viticulture, Chateau Beaucastel is often criticized for the influence of Brettanomyces, yeast that may contribute animalistic flavors to the wine. They are also controversial for their vinification practice of rapidly heating the incoming must in order to kill bacteria and extract color and flavor from the skins. After maturation in oak casks, the wine is bottled with light fining and no filtration. The house produces several cuvees, the grand vin known as Chateau Beaucastel. Their other wines include Hommage a Jean Perrin, Chateau Beaucastel Blanc, Roussanne Vieilles Vignes. Good values can be had by their Cotes du Rhone, Coudoulet de Beaucastel and their negociant line under the name Vieille Ferme.
