  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 90

A chunky and compacted Cabernet, with currant, mint and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, fruity finish. Very ripe and rich. Tight and still closed.--Georges de Latour Private Reserve vertical. 8,900 cases made.

Among the very last of the 1990 Cabernet Sauvignons to be released, Beaulieu has packaged the Reserve in a newly designed, heavy glass bottle sporting an attractive label that contrasts sharply with the simplistic Private Reserve labels of the past. While the wine is certainly good, no bells or whistles rang after two separate tastings. The color is a healthy dark ruby with noticeable lightening at the edge. The subtle, reserved nose offers pleasant aromas of oak and a whiff of weedy blackcurrants and spice. Medium-bodied, with fine richness and ripeness, as well as noticeable acidity and moderately high tannin, this is a spicy, well-made Cabernet Sauvignon, but at this price, consumers should receive more for their money.

Medium-dark ruby-garnet color. Full, gingery, berry-cassis and mineral bouquet, showing good fruit concentration and maturity. Full, sinewy flavors reveal good extract and weight of fruit backed by fine tannins and low acidity. There is a lot of class here, though the structure is evidenced by the firm, slightly dry finish. 3% Merlot included. Needs time.

In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour sold his thriving cream of tartar business, bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France.Today the winery continues to turn to innovative practices to craft wines in a bold, classic style. They have become a leader in clonal research, and the BV Clone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are highly acclaimed. Most recently a new state-of-the-art winery was completed within one of the original buildings. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional, wine-the longtime benchmark of Rutherford Cabernet.
