Another sensational wine is the 1989 Cote Rotie la Landonne. Served right next to the '99 and just as deep ruby in color, it offered a classic array of truffle, underbrush, licorice, smoked meats, black olive and sweet dark fruits. Deep, concentrated, ultra-pure and with building tannin, it's a killer, fully mature Cote Rotie that will continue to knock your socks off over the coming decade or more. Reviewed: September, 2015

Rich and aromatic. The ripe plum, chocolate, toast and spice flavors are concentrated and harmonious; the firm tannins promise long life. Hard now, it should begin to open in 1999.--Guigal Cote-Rotie vertical. 700 cases made.

Guigal’s 1989 Côte Rôtie La Landonne could not have been more different. This super-ripe, dark Côte Rôtie boasted awesome concentration and richness in its black fruit, spice and chocolate flavors. This was a truly phenomenal flight. Reviewed: August, 2007

Dark crimson. Heady and rich. Scented, floral and rather Petrus-like. Sweet and suave. Gloriously hedonistic. Reviewed: May, 2013

  • Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
